Awards season is quickly approaching in theaters, and for moviegoers that means fewer big blockbusters meant to break box office records, and more smaller, personal stories being released for awards consideration. Whether the film is looking to get Oscar buzz for the director, a cast member, or another member of production, these films can sometimes bring together big name talent to make that effort possible. Allied falls into this category of potential Oscar contenders, especially with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard set to star. Behind the camera will be Robert Zemeckis, as he portrays a love story between Pitt and Cotillard’s characters in the 1940s.
The story will follow Max Vatan (Pitt) and Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) as they grow closer following an encounter during a mission in Germany at the time. When the two reunite down the road, a relationship is sparked, until Vatan comes to learn that his wife could be a spy.
Now the full-length trailer for Allied has arrived, giving fans interested the movie more chances to see Pitt and Cotillard on screen together. The new trailer highlights how deadly both of their characters can be, but also follows the progression of their relationship throughout the years. After all the good times together, Vatan learning that his wife may be a German spy puts a new angle on the film.
The new trailer is sure to get people interested in seeing the film thanks to what appears to be a strong story and performances by Pitt and Cotillard. Both actors have plenty of experience starring in period dramas, and Pitt in particular seems to be at home in movies set during the Second World War, having previously played key roles in Inglourious Basterds and Fury. He has more war movies coming up too: Afghanistan war satire War Machine, and a sequel to zombie-filled action flick World War Z. Cotillard, meanwhile, can also be seen in this year’s big screen adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed games.
There’s no doubt that possible awards consideration will continue to be talked about in the lead-up to the film’s release. Pitt, Cotillard, and Zemeckis have each already won an Oscar, and it appears as though this film could garner more nominations - and potentially wins - for each or all. Zemeckis’ last movie, The Walk, was not a runaway box office hit but garnered plenty of critical acclaim, so hopefully the director is still on form.
Allied opens in U.S. theaters November 23, 2016.
